How to adjust your enduro suspension in the mountains

On a steep, rough special stage, poorly adjusted suspension becomes apparent within a few corners: the front wheel bounces on roots, the rear bottoms out on compressions, your arms overheat too quickly, and your line becomes unpredictable. Knowing how to adjust your enduro suspension for mountain riding isn't about copying another rider's clicks. The correct setup depends on your weight and gear, your bike, your speed, and above all, the terrain you're riding.

In Verbier, as elsewhere in alpine terrain, long descents combine hard braking, steep gradients, loose rocks, and natural berms. Your suspension must keep the wheels on the ground without turning the bike into an unstable sofa. Here's a simple, precise, and practical method for riding on the trail.

Start with a ready-to-ride bike

Before touching a valve or dial, check its overall condition. The stanchions should be clean, the seals leak-free, and the compression and rebound adjustments should turn freely. A fork or shock absorber in maintenance delay does not adjust correctly: friction increases, the oil does not work properly and the behavior changes as the descent progresses.

Also prepare your bike in its actual riding configuration. Wear a helmet, shoes, a hydration pack, and protective gear if you'll be riding with it. A liter of water, knee pads, and a backpack can significantly change the weight borne by the shock absorber. Adjust your tire pressure before judging the suspension. A tire that's too hard will make the fork feel too stiff; a tire that's too soft can make the bike seem to lack support.

To start fresh, open the compression dampers to the middle of their range, or follow the manufacturer's recommended starting setting. Note the pressure, the number of clicks, and any volume spacers already installed. This record will allow you to revert to the previous setting if an attempt doesn't work.

Adjusting the sag of your enduro suspension in the mountains

Sag is the amount the suspension compresses under your weight when you're in a neutral position on the bike. It's the starting point for everything else. Without proper sag, adjusting rebound or compression is like correcting the wrong problem.

At the rear: finding the balance between grip and support

On an enduro bike, generally aim for 28 to 33% shock sag. A rider looking for a very lively bike, who jumps a lot or rides fast trails, might prefer closer to 28 to 30%. For more grip on roots, slabs, and rough terrain, 30 to 33% is often more comfortable and forgiving.

Inflate the shock in small increments, then pump it several times to balance the air chambers before each measurement. Dismount the bike without bouncing and observe the sag ring. With a coil spring, the adjustment is made first with the correct spring rate. Preload should only be used to slightly adjust the position, not to compensate for a spring that is too soft. If you have to tighten it significantly, the spring is probably unsuitable.

Too little sag results in a high, firm, and twitchy rear end that loses traction on rough terrain. Too much sag places the bike too low, steepens the head angle on descents, and causes the suspension travel to be used up very quickly. The right amount of sag is a starting point: the actual handling on the trail is always the deciding factor.

At the front: maintain support without absorbing impacts

For the fork, a sag range of 15 to 20% is suitable for many enduro riding styles. On very steep terrain, avoid setting it too soft. A fork that compresses excessively under braking loads the front end too much and reduces your margin for error in big compressions.

Measure in an attack position, standing on the pedals with your hands naturally resting on the handlebars. Don't rely on simply sitting on the bike. If you're riding with an air fork, also consult the manufacturer's chart for the travel and rider weight. This is an excellent starting point, but not a definitive guideline.

Adjust the rebound: allow the wheel to return to the correct speed

Rebound control determines how quickly the suspension extends after compression. It's often the adjustment that most quickly transforms the ride feel, provided it's done correctly.

Too slow a rebound prevents the suspension from returning to its original position between impacts. Over a series of rocks or roots, it gradually sinks and becomes hard: this is called compression. The bike feels low, bounces in your hands, and loses grip as the trail deteriorates.

Too rapid a rebound, on the other hand, causes the wheel to bounce. The bike becomes twitchy, deviates from its line, and can throw you forward in bumps. At the rear, this can create a jarring, smacking sensation when cornering or landing.

Start with the recommended setting, then ride a short, familiar descent. Adjust only one or two clicks at a time. If the wheel doesn't follow small bumps and the bike stiffens up on rough sections, open up the rebound damping, making it faster. If the bike bounces off impacts and requires constant grip on the handlebars, close it slightly.

Adjust the front and rear suspension together, without aiming for perfect symmetry. A fork and a shock absorber don't have the same air volume, kinematics, or adjustment knob. The goal is a stable bike that regains its height between obstacles while keeping the wheels firmly planted on the ground.

Compression: support, not stiffness

Compression slows down the suspension's movement. It can be low-speed, often useful for rider movements, cornering, and braking, or high-speed, used for fast impacts like rocks, landings, and big compressions. The term "speed" describes the speed at which the suspension travels, not the speed of the bike.

Start with the low-speed compression fairly open. Gradually increase the support if the bike dives under braking, bottoms out in berms, or bobs during acceleration. Two or three clicks may be enough. Too tight, and it reduces grip on small bumps and unnecessarily tires your arms.

High-speed compression requires more restraint. If you repeatedly bottom out despite proper sag and clean riding, add some high-speed compression, if your suspension has it. But if bottoming out only occurs on a big landing or a compression hit too quickly, it's not necessarily a setup issue.

On an air fork, volume spacers often offer a better solution when the initial travel is comfortable but the end of the travel lacks support. Adding a spacer makes the progression more pronounced without having to overinflate the fork. However, too many volume spacers can make the end of the travel feel harsh. This is an adjustment to be made with caution, ideally following the recommendations of a professional fork repair shop.

Test it on a real piece of land

A parking lot allows you to adjust the sag, but not to validate an enduro suspension setup. Choose a two- to five-minute segment with braking, roots, corners, and significant compression. Make several runs at a similar speed. Change only one parameter at a time, then note your impressions immediately.

Look for concrete sensations: does the fork dive under the first braking? Does the rear bottom out under the same compression? Do the wheels maintain contact on off-camber sections? Do your hands hurt more because the suspension is too stiff, or because you're tensing up? Specific questions prevent you from adjusting the knobs randomly.

In the mountains, leave yourself some room for error. A perfect setting on a smooth, dry track can be too firm when the rain arrives, roots become slippery, or a 1,000-meter descent leaves your arms feeling the burn. Slightly opening up the compression and increasing the rebound by one click can provide more grip in the wet, but you still need to maintain enough support for braking and cornering.

Mistakes that complicate everything

The first mistake is trying to eliminate all movement. A suspension system works: it compresses, rebounds, and uses its travel. Seeing the fork crown near the end of its travel after a steep descent isn't a problem in itself. The problem is violent and repetitive bottoming out, or conversely, unused travel because the bike is set up too stiff.

The second method involves adjusting pressure, rebound, and compression simultaneously. You'll never know what improved or worsened the performance. Finally, don't blindly copy a friend's setup. Even with the same weight, your position, bike, skill level, and terrain may dictate different choices.
